Equine aromatherapy -The use of essential oils with horses.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to try using some essential oils with their horse under the guidance of a qualified therapist.

Essential oils are the concentrated vital extracts of plants, some of which have very beneficial effects on a horse’s emotional and physical wellbeing.

With their keen sense of smell, horses in the wild will always select particular plants when needed to boost their health or help fight an illness.

Our modern-day equines in their restricted paddocks do not have this same access to a wide variety of healing plants yet they still retain the ability to detect the healing qualities.

By offering them a selection of essential oils we can replace this ‘ self medication ‘ and allow them to choose any of the plants they feel in need of. Instead of having to eat the plant, the horse can inhale it's vital, volatile elements and these are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream in the nasal cavity. The chemicals travel in the blood to the brain where they can affect mood, emotions, behaviour etc and also around the body to any site where they may be needed to help boost the healing process.

Oils can help with a whole range of conditions, for example –allergies, skin conditions, laminitis, mud fever, sarcoids, digestive problems and wounds. Simply having a few oils in your basic first-aid kit will be very useful, and there may be many occasions when the calming influence of certain oils will be invaluable!

Come and see for yourself what the oils can do and learn how to use them If there is enough interest we will run some day or half-day workshops on the range of essential oils available and how they can be used. Remember, if you are at all worried about your horse’s condition – call the vet first.

Essential oils can be used to great effect after a diagnosis has been made.
